Welcome

Throughout time, artists have led revolutions, shifted the course of culture, and stimulated new ways of sensing, thinking and being.  The somatic practice of Continuum Movement has entered and altered the lives of artists, infusing their artworks with unusual sensuality, aliveness and innovation.  This website offers a virtual gallery of Continuum-informed art. The ideas taking form in these works exist as the shimmer of our possible evolution.  We invite you to explore what you find here, notice what moves you and leave us your comments.

Thank you for your interest and attention,

“The artist is a kind of warrior. It takes courage to have people enter your secret chamber and see what is going on there. The creative spirit really needs to be fostered and tended to… The creative spirit is what saves us.”—Emilie Conrad

The Spirit Soars

“The Spirit Soars” is an 8-minute video featuring Emilie Conrad, founder of Continuum Movement, on the intimate and essential process of making art.  Our launch date, June 14, 2014, celebrated what would have been Emilie’s 80th birthday.  Although Emilie did not live to see Continuum Movement Arts come to life, she enthusiastically supported the plan to create the site as the start of an arts movement inspired by Continuum.  You can also watch original footage of her dances: Nijinsky (2007) and  Kafka in Love (2008).

Through the practice of Continuum Movement, artists explore. . .

Through Continuum Movement, explore . . .

Fludity

Our bodies are primarily fluid, we begin life embryonically in fluid, and our life form evolved from the fluid sea. The motion of our breath, inhale and exhale, is a fluid movement. Continuum Movement Arts explores what happens when we become more fluid in our movement.

Sensation

Before thought, before emotion, there is sensation. Sensation is the body’s primary language, our earliest way of knowing ourselves. What happens to art makers when they develop their understanding of themselves as sensate beings with the practice of Continuum Movement?  What kind of art develops?

Open Attention

In the practice of Continuum Movement, sequences of breath, sound and movement provide a path of exploration. Open attention is a time of tuning inward, simply sensing, observing and being present with one’s self. Open attention opens a door to self-understanding.

Space/Time

In the breath, sound and movement explorations of Continuum, we enter a state of timelessness – an antidote to the high speed of our “normal” lives.  Continuum offers varied ways of exploring space. The body feels less compressed, less dense, less restricted — free to emerge from a boundless sense of being.
